US Mass Incarceration gets relief with Yoga

The vast Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department just reopened.

And they want us back – it’s coming down from the mayor herself. They recognize us as a serious and valuable rehab program. Well, we got a crew -- thanks in part to Synergy Yoga for hosting a volunteer training! 😊

The Metro West jail holds over 2000 and a lot of them want yoga. In fact we once had over 200 on a waiting list and they only gave us space for a fraction of them. That pained me. Anyways, we started last week with 2 back-to-back classes.

The PRE TRIAL -- an old 9-story jail with some of the more hard-core inmates. Only now they are letting us in! As our volunteer (once incarcerated) told our group “You are in the fire.” With our tools it can become the Fire of Transformation!💥

The TGK has both INTAKE, and a couple units each of FEMALE, PSYCHIATRIC, JUVENILES OF SERIOUS CHARGES and a nearby BOOT CAMP.

They want to start with the women. I hope we can again service all populations.

The intensity of need and the level of appreciation you can feel in these charity classes -- you cannot believe.

I recall how one woman took me aside after class and said:

“Please, make sure that they don’t take me off the list for as long as I am here.” 🙏
